How did Heo Young-ji join KARA?

Winning the KARA Project competition

Following the departures of Nicole Jung and Kang Ji-young from KARA, DSP Media launched KARA Project in May 2014, a reality television show designed to select a new member for the group. The competition featured seven trainees from DSP Media competing against one another through various performance evaluations and public voting.

Despite suffering a leg injury during practice that caused her to miss two live performances, Youngji captured viewer attention and consistently topped the voting charts throughout the competition. The live voting results commenced on July 1, 2014, at 6:45 pm KST, with Youngji proclaimed the winner after achieving a total score of 49,591. Her victory came against three other finalists, including Chaewon Kim, Sojin Ahn, and former PURETTY member So-min Jeon.

Becoming KARA's newest member in 2014

Following her victory on the competition, Youngji delivered a winning speech expressing her commitment to work harder as KARA's new member. On July 2, DSP Media officially announced her as the fourth member of KARA, joining existing members Gyuri, Seungyeon, and Hara. The group transitioned from operating as a trio to a four-member configuration with her addition.

Her debut with Day & Night album

KARA released their sixth mini album Day & Night on August 18, 2014, marking Youngji's official debut with the group. The album featured "Mamma Mia" as its title track, produced by Duble Sidekick. This release represented the first KARA project to feature Youngji and the group's first comeback following Nicole and Jiyoung's departures. An album showcase event for Day & Night took place at SBS Prism Tower in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul on the release date.

Heo Young-ji's role in KARA

Upon joining KARA in 2014, Youngji assumed the positions of Main Rapper, Lead Dancer, and Vocalist within the group's Third Generation lineup alongside Gyuri, Seungyeon, and Hara. The immediate demands of her new role required intensive preparation, as she memorized choreography for over 30 songs within a compressed timeframe to accommodate the group's scheduled tour. This rapid learning curve reflected the group's active performance schedule and established repertoire that preceded her arrival.

Youngji's approach to her role emphasized diligence and consideration for her senior members. She maintained a conscious distinction between her status and that of the existing members, repeatedly reminding herself that promotion alongside them did not equate to occupying the same position. This perspective manifested in her practice habits, where she committed to flawless execution of choreography to avoid causing inconvenience to the group. Fellow member Goo Hara expressed during a Roommate appearance that Youngji possessed distinctive charms absent from existing members and contributed a more youthful energy to KARA.

At twenty years old during her debut, Youngji's tenure with KARA spanned approximately two years of active promotion. The group performed their final shows with the four-member configuration during July 2015 tour dates in Japan. In January 2016, DSP Media announced the departure of Gyuri, Seungyeon, and Hara following contract expirations, marking the conclusion of KARA's group activities. The disbandment period represented significant challenges for Youngji, who struggled with independent career navigation after the group's conclusion.

Her connection to KARA persisted beyond the group's disbandment. She maintained regular contact with members, visiting their social media profiles daily and frequently accessing Goo Hara's account. "Mamma Mia" remained her preferred choreography, which she continued practicing alone at home.

The following year brought two additional cameo roles. She appeared in Are You Human? as an entertainer, followed by a role in The Beauty Inside where she portrayed Han Se-gye's fan in Episode 13.

This statement preceded her systematic entry into dramatic roles and reflected her intention to expand beyond musical performance and variety entertainment into scripted acting work.
