Who is Kang Ji-Young?
Kang Ji-young is a South Korean singer, songwriter and actress born on January 18, 1994, known professionally under the mononyms Jiyoung and the stage name JY. At age 14, she rose to fame as a member of the girl group KARA, joining the ensemble in 2008 alongside Goo Hara following the departure of Kim Sung-hee. The group returned to the music scene as a quintet on July 24, 2008, marking the beginning of her career in the entertainment industry.
KARA, dubbed as "Hallyu Queens," achieved mainstream success across Asia, particularly in Japan where the group earned ten top-five singles on the Oricon Singles Chart. Jiyoung remained with KARA until April 2014, when she departed the group upon contract expiration. She subsequently rejoined for the group's 15th anniversary commemorative album Move Again in 2022, followed by concert tours spanning 2024 to 2025.
Following her initial departure from KARA, Jiyoung relocated to Japan and shifted focus onto her acting career. Joining KARA in 2008
Following a DSP Media audition, Jiyoung underwent one month of training before joining KARA as a replacement for departed member Kim Sung-hee. She made her broadcast debut on M Countdown performing alongside fellow newcomer Goo Hara on July 24, 2008. The group's mini-album Rock U was released the next day, marking their first release as a quintet. This comeback featured a cute and playful image, contrasting with the group's previous mature concept. The transformation proved strategic, as KARA began establishing a distinct identity in the competitive Korean music industry.

KARA's commercial breakthrough arrived with "Mister" in 2009, where the song's signature "butt dance" became a cultural phenomenon in the Korean music scene. The group released their mini-album Lupin on February 17, 2010, which topped most Korean music website charts. Subsequent releases included the full-length album Step on September 6, 2011, and the mini-album Pandora on August 22, 2012. The group recorded sales exceeding one million physical singles in Japan within two years.
