Agassy the debut EP by Soojin
Agassy is the debut EP by South Korean singer Soojin, released on November 8, 2023. It features six tracks, including the lead single of the same name. Soojin aimed to showcase a new blend of her qualities and a more mature sound with a mix of genres. The EP reached number seven on the Circle Chart and will be supported by Soojin's Flowering tour starting in February 2024.
The physical release comes in four versions: Red, Blue and two Jewel versions (A and B).

Background and release
On March 4, 2021, Cube Entertainment announced that Soojin from (G)I-dle would temporarily halt all activities due to false bullying allegations. In August 2021, she officially withdrew from the group and label. Soojin remained out of the public eye until June 30, 2023, when she opened a personal Instagram account, hinting at a possible return to the entertainment industry.
On October 16, the singer signed with BRD Communications. She is preparing for a solo comeback and released a dance performance video titled "Black Forest" on October 25. BRD announced that her debut EP, "Agassy," will be released on November 8. The track listing and a highlight medley were released on November 1 and 3 respectively. Teasers for the music video were released on November 6 and 7, followed by the release of "Agassy" and its music video on November 8.
Composition (Songs)
The standard edition of Agassy consists of six tracks spanning dance, R&B, and K-ballad genres. This EP marks a new beginning for Soojin, solidifying her position as a solo artist by showcasing her unique strengths and unrivaled musical style, which has matured. The mini album's tracks were written and composed by a diverse group of songwriter-producers including Yuth, Rhode, Suen, Kim Chae Ah, Flip_00, Ellui, Josh Grant, and Alisa Xayalith.
The opening song, "Flowering," depicts flowers blooming in warm sunlight with a guitar and string melody that creates a sense of tension. The title track combines Soojin's unique style with an oriental sound, representing the crossing of past and present. "Sunflower" expresses falling in love and developing deep emotions, comparing it to a blooming sunflower. "TyTy" is a bright and catchy track that expresses gratitude towards someone who protects the singer without saying a word, featuring twinkling synths and wispy falsettos.
"Sunset" is a hazy R&B track sung in an alto register over a bossanova rhythm. The song has poetic lyrics about watching the sun set beneath the horizon. "Bloodredroses" is a melancholic note that expresses the pain of a dissolved romantic relationship. Soojin acknowledges the trials and tribulations she faced and finds space to accept her growth because of and despite them.
Critical reception
Carmen Chin of NME praised the EP as a "captivating love letter to herself" and a showcase of her strength in returning to her strengths. She noted that while the production could be considered safe and ordinary, it highlights Soojin's longstanding potential for all to see once again.
Promotion
On November 10, 2023, Soojin announced her decision to prioritize her overseas activities over domestic ones. She chose to host fan signing events and engage with fans through social media. On November 20, she performed the title track at Naver's Playlist NPOP. Furthermore, she held her first fan meet and greet at Cutup Studio in Tower Records Shibuya, Japan on December 13 and 14.
Commercial performance
Agassy made its debut on the Circle Album Chart, securing the eighth spot, after selling 66,463 copies in under five days of tracking. The EP continued to climb the charts and reached a new peak at number seven for the week of December 3-9, 2023. Just ten days later, on December 13, the mini album surpassed the impressive milestone of selling over 100,000 copies on the Hanteo Chart.
