On September 18, 2023, SM Entertainment announced that Red Velvet's third studio album would be released in November. The album, originally titled "What a Chill Kill," was later renamed to "Chill Kill" and would feature ten tracks, including the lead single with the same name. Promotional materials such as mood sampler teaser videos and a teaser trailer were released leading up to the album's release on November 13, alongside the music video for "Chill Kill."
