Red Velvet (λ λ벨벳) is a five-member girl group under SM Entertainment. The group debuted on August 1, 2014 with originally four members: Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy. Yeri joined in March 2015.
The group's name represents its concept, defined by two different images, "Red" and "Velvet". "Red" signifies their vivid and bold image, whereas "Velvet" reflects their classy and toned-down side. Songs like "Happiness", "Ice Cream Cake", and "Dumb Dumb" falling into the "Red" concept, in contrast to "Be Natural", "Automatic", and "One of These Nights" which falls into the "Velvet" concept, with "Russian Roulette" and "Rookie" falling in both "Red" and "Velvet" concepts.

Before their debut, Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Yeri were previously part SM Rookies, SM Entertainment's pre-debut team of trainees under SR14G (SMROOKIES 2014 Girls). The members appeared in multiple music videos and posted their own content using SM Rookies. Seulgi was the first to be recruited in 2007 through SM Saturday Open Audition and made a cameo in Henry's "Fantastic". Irene became a trainee of SM Entertainment back in 2009, and made a cameo in Henry's "1-4-3 (I Love You)". Wendy was recruited in 2012 during SM Global Audition in Canada, and released an OST for drama Mimi. Joy was recruited through SM Global Audition in Seoul in 2012. Finally, Yeri was casted from SM Global Audition in US in 2011.

Kang Seul Gi (κ°μ¬κΈ°; born Feb 10, 1994), simply known as Seulgi, is Main Dancer, Lead Vocalist of the Kpop group Red Velvet and the sub-unit Irene & Seulgi. Seulgi was 20 years old when she debuted with Red Velvet in 2014.
Seulgi joined SM Entertainment in 2007 after participating in an open SM audition in 2006. She was in sixth grade when she passed the audition. She trained for a total of seven years before her official debut with Red Velvet on Aug 1, 2014 at the age of 20. She is the main dancer and lead vocalist of the group.

Son Seung Wan (μμΉμ; also stylized Shon Seung Wan), better known as Wendy, is a South Korean singer and the main vocalist of the Kpop group Red Velvet. Wendy was 20 years old when she debuted with Red Velvet in 2014.
Wendy started dreaming of becoming a singer at the age of 6. She moved to Canada when she was in fifth grade. She later moved to Minnesota, United States from seventh grade to ninth grade. Her family moved back to Canada and she graduated from high school there. Wendy did very well in school and was selected as an outstanding student with a GPA of 3.85.
Wendy participated in many competitions while she was a student. She won several awards in 7th and 8th grade. She was also the main soprano at her school choir and won the vocalist of the year for several years.
Wendy auditioned for Cube Entertainment in 2010 and made to the top 15 finalists. It was also revealed by YG Entertainment's CEO that Wendy once auditioned for YG Entertainment but did not pass. Joy entered SM Entertainment in 2012 after passing their global audition. She was the only member of Red Velvet (RV) that was not part of SM Rookies. She trained for 2.5 years before making her official debut with Red Velvet on Aug 1, 2014 at the age of 17.

Yeri joined SM Entertainment after passing an open global audition in 2011. She appeared originally in Red Velvet's Happiness MV as a member of SM Rookies. The video was released in Aug 2014. At the time, she had not debuted with the group yet.
