What are LOONA Members?

LOONA members are the individual performers comprising the South Korean girl group LOONA, stylized as LOOΠΔ, formerly managed by BlockBerry Creative. The group consists of twelve members who debuted between 2016 and 2018: HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, YeoJin, ViVi, Kim Lip, JinSoul, Choerry, Yves, Chuu, Go Won, and HyeJu (formerly known as Olivia Hye). Each member received an individual solo debut before the full group formation, creating a unique pre-debut project spanning nearly two years. As of 2022, the active lineup comprises eleven members following Chuu's removal from the group on November 25, 2022.

Each member possesses distinct representative attributes that form their individual identity within the group. These attributes include designated colors, animals, shapes, flowers, and in some cases, fruits and specific locations. For instance, HeeJin represents vivid pink with a rabbit symbol and a square shape, while Kim Lip embodies red with an owl symbol and a circular shape. HaSeul, the group's leader, holds green as her representative color with a white bird as her animal symbol. Similarly, ViVi represents pastel rose with a deer, YeoJin embodies orange with a frog, JinSoul carries blue and black with a blue Betta fish, Choerry represents purple and white with a fruit bat, Yves holds burgundy with a swan, Go Won carries Eden green with an Emperor butterfly, and HyeJu represents silver and black with a wolf.

The members are organized into three distinct sub-units that debuted separately before the full group formation. LOONA 1/3 comprises HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, and ViVi. ODD EYE CIRCLE includes Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry as members. The third sub-unit, yyxy (read as "youth youth by young"), consists of Yves, Chuu, Go Won, and HyeJu. This sub-unit structure allowed members to showcase different musical styles and concepts, with each unit maintaining its own distinct sound and visual identity within the broader LOONA universe.

LOONA Sub-units and Member Groups

LOONA 1/3

LOONA 1/3 debuted on March 12, 2017, as the first sub-unit comprising HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, and ViVi. The extended play Love & Live accompanied the debut on March 13, 2017, with promotional activities on SBS's Inkigayo. The sub-unit's name derives from representing one-third of the group's total membership, with YeoJin symbolically representing the slash mark between 1 and 3. On April 27, 2017, a repackaged edition titled Love & Evil released with the single "Sonatine".

The sub-unit's musical direction centers on soft love concepts, exploring themes of first love excitement and heartbreak. Within the LOONA universe, each member possesses a representative location, such as HeeJin representing Paris. Love & Live reached number 10 on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart, while Love & Evil peaked at number 24. The production budget for LOONA 1/3 reportedly reached 4 million dollars, with music video filming locations spanning New Zealand and Hong Kong.

LOONA Odd Eye Circle

Odd Eye Circle, consisting of Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry, debuted on September 21, 2017, with the extended play Mix & Match and the single "Girl Front". The sub-unit began promotions on Mnet's M Countdown following their debut. On October 31, 2017, the repackaged edition Max & Match released with three additional songs, including the lead single "Sweet Crazy Love". The EP reached number 16 on the Gaon Album Chart, while the repackaged version peaked at number 7.

The sub-unit employs a girl crush concept addressing fondness, seduction, playfulness, romance, and intimacy. Each member possesses unique supernatural abilities within the LOONA universe, such as Kim Lip's time travel capability. Following successful contract terminations with BlockBerry Creative on January 13, 2023, the trio signed with Modhaus on March 17, 2023. Modhaus filed a trademark application for the Odd Eye Circle name on March 27, 2023. On July 12, 2023, the sub-unit released their second EP with the lead track "Air Force One," co-written by Kim Lip, marking their first release in nearly six years.

LOONA yyxy

LOONA yyxy, an abbreviation for "youth youth by young," debuted on May 30, 2018, with the extended play Beauty & the Beat. The sub-unit consists of Yves, Chuu, Go Won, and HyeJu. The title track "love4eva" featured Canadian musician Grimes, who collaborated after fan requests. The extended play achieved number 4 on the Gaon Album Chart.

The sub-unit's concept revolves around an Eden dimension where members experience love, hurt, and brokenness while capturing moments of youth. What Happened to LOONA Members?

Contract Disputes with BlockBerry Creative

Contract disputes emerged when Chuu filed a provisional injunction to suspend her contract with BlockBerry Creative in January 2022, which the court accepted. Following this ruling, Chuu remained notably absent from promotional activities, including the group's first world tour, though BlockBerry cited scheduling conflicts at the time. On November 25, 2022, BlockBerry Creative announced Chuu's removal from the group, alleging violent language and power abuse toward staff. Chuu responded via Instagram, stating she had not done anything shameful. The Seoul High Court ruled in Chuu's favor in August 2023, officially nullifying her contract and ordering BlockBerry to bear lawsuit costs. BlockBerry appealed for a second trial, but the ruling remained unchanged as of March 8, 2024.

Members' Legal Battles

On November 28, 2022, nine members excluding ViVi and HyunJin filed injunctions to terminate their exclusive contracts. BlockBerry Creative denied these reports, calling them groundless. The Seoul Northern District Court ruled on January 13, 2023, granting preliminary injunctions to HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry due to contract terms identical to Chuu's. Five members—HaSeul, YeoJin, Yves, Go Won, and HyeJu—initially lost their cases because amendments made to their contracts in 2021 resulted in denied injunctions. On February 3, 2023, ViVi and HyunJin filed for contract suspension. These two members received preliminary injunctions on May 9, 2023.

The remaining five members won their lawsuit on June 16, 2023, when the court confirmed their exclusive contracts had no effect. The court accepted their secondary claim for contract termination after members notified BlockBerry in 2023 that the company had transferred contractual rights to a Japanese entertainment agency without prior written consent. BlockBerry filed petitions with Korean entertainment associations to ban former members from activities in South Korea.

Group's Indefinite Hiatus

BlockBerry Creative postponed the comeback album "The Origin Album: 0," originally scheduled for January 3, 2023, indefinitely on December 22, 2022. Pre-order sales dropped by 98% following fan boycotts protesting Chuu's removal and member mistreatment. The company acknowledged that comeback activities would be meaningless while concerns about member circumstances remained unresolved.

Loossemble (CTDENM)

Following their contract terminations, five members formed Loossemble under CTDENM, debuting with their self-titled EP on September 15, 2023, in New York City. The quintet released three extended plays during their tenure: the debut Loossemble with lead single "Sensitive", One of a Kind on April 16, 2024, featuring "Girls' Night", and TTYL on September 2, 2024. On November 29, 2024, CTDENM announced the termination of Loossemble's exclusive contract. Member HyeJu assured fans on messaging platform Fromm that the members would "still be seeing each other". Notwithstanding their stated intentions to continue as a group, complications arose with potential new agencies. Go Won revealed on May 27, 2025, through livestream that issues emerged with a company under discussion, indicating the group was starting over again. HyunJin announced on June 5, 2025, that she would manage her own activities through Triangle ENM. The same day, YeoJin released her digital single "Dancing In The Dark". HyunJin confirmed on June 12, 2025, that Loossemble entered an indefinite hiatus after contract disputes with a prospective agency remained unresolved for six months.

ARTMS (Modhaus)

Five members debuted as ARTMS under Modhaus with the studio album DALL on May 31, 2024, alongside lead single "Virtual Angel". The group released four pre-release singles preceding the album, starting with "Birth" on March 29, 2024. ARTMS conducted their first world tour from July to November 2024 and launched their second world tour, Lunar Theory, in March 2025, spanning South Korea, North America, and Europe. The group released their extended play Club Icarus with lead single "Icarus" on June 13, 2025. On March 26, 2025, all five members renewed their exclusive contracts with Modhaus. HaSeul began a hiatus on April 9, 2026, for shoulder surgery, with ARTMS continuing as four members for upcoming promotions and tours.

Yves debuted as a solo artist under Paix Per Mil with the EP Loop on May 29, 2024. Chuu released her EP Howl on October 18, 2023, followed by the single "Chocolate" on February 13, 2024, and her third EP Only Cry in the Rain on April 21, 2025.

FAQs

Members have publicly addressed various aspects of their work and personal practices through interviews and official statements. During promotional activities for the [12:00] album release, the group discussed album themes alongside personal topics including self-care routines and embarrassing onstage experiences.

The group's fictional universe, known as the Loonaverse, features character representations distinct from the performers themselves. The character previously known as Olivia Hye within this narrative framework refers exclusively to the fictional representation and does not apply to the actual performer, Son HyeJu. This distinction emerged following the performer's transition to using her birth name professionally. Fans and media outlets recognize this separation between the fictional character in the Loonaverse storyline and the real individual.

Members maintain separate identities between their artistic personas within concept-driven projects and their authentic selves. This dual identity system reflects the complex narrative structure BlockBerry Creative implemented during the group's formation period, where each performer embodied both a real-world artist identity and a fictional character within the interconnected Loonaverse mythology. The terminology distinction remains relevant for discussing historical content and theoretical analyses of the group's conceptual framework while respecting the performers' current professional preferences.
