Music and Lyrics

The song "Midas Touch" showcases KISS OF LIFE's retro and nostalgic sound, reminiscent of early 2000s girl groups. The composition draws inspiration from iconic pop hits of the Y2K era, particularly Britney Spears' "Toxic". The choppy chord patterns, orchestral hits, and snappy snare drums create a driving groove that pays homage to the turn-of-the-century pop sound. The use of super saws adds a modern touch while maintaining the familiarity of the referenced era.

The top line and vocal performance play a crucial role in selling the concept, with confident delivery, vocal cracks, and beautiful runs that evoke the spirit of the 2000s. The song also incorporates harmonic tension through the lead topline melody and background vocal harmonies, a technique commonly used in songs from that era.

"Midas Touch" concludes with a powerful, dramatic ending featuring a fake-out ending combined with a strong final phrase, typical of the songs it draws inspiration from. Guitars are not entirely missing from "Midas Touch" as they add an extra sparkle to the production while further emphasizing the style that the song references.

The lyrics of "Midas Touch" play with the concept of the Midas touch, a reference to the Greek myth of King Midas, who could turn anything he touched into gold. In this modern interpretation, the touch is not about literal gold but about an enchanting allure that captivates and holds someone in thrall. The song's protagonist warns of the danger and toxicity of their attraction, suggesting that once they touch or kiss someone, that person will be unable to escape their influence. This is a metaphor for a powerful, almost magical, seductive ability that leaves others lovesick and deeply infatuated.

The repeated lines "When I touch ya, kiss ya, you're gon' realize" and "You see, I got that Midas touch" emphasize the confidence and allure of the singer, who knows the effect they have on others. The lyrics also contain a playful and slightly menacing undertone, as the protagonist compares themselves to a kitty cat that no one can handle, and talks about love as a game they enjoy playing. The song's narrative is about the thrill of the chase and the excitement of a love that is as dangerous as it is enticing.

Visual Aesthetics

The music video for 'Midas Touch' is a visual feast, showcasing the members' stunning visuals in a 4:4 aspect ratio. The accompanying music video perfectly complements the song's retro and nostalgic sound, transporting viewers back to the early 2000s era of girl groups.

Album Design

The concept photos for this comeback were absolutely stunning, capturing the essence of Kiss Of Life's unique style and aesthetic. The album packaging for 'Midas Touch' features individual member photos, highlighting the beauty and charisma of each member. The attention to detail in the album artwork further emphasizes the group's commitment to delivering a complete and immersive experience for their fans.

The album design incorporates aesthetics from the Y2K era as well as design elements from the postmodern era of the 1970s, featuring chrome and 3D graphics, bold and bubbly fonts, a rush of bubblegum pink and pastels, and an abundance of textures. However, it does seem to lack certain aspects of technology and cyber culture that would make it more authentic to the Y2K period, but this is a modern interpretation blending in contemporary design elements.

Music Video Insights

The visuals in the music video effectively convey the old-school feel that the group has become known for since their debut. The Medusa metaphors are cool as hell, with the use of snakes and the mythical element of ancient Greece adding a nice touch. The shots of Natty with the crazy hair and then the web that she's going to catch you in, almost like a black widow situation but with diamonds as the webbing, are incredibly striking.

The literal touch of Natty touching the ground as she's driving the motorcycle, with the sparks and the concrete turning into gold and coins, is a nice touch (no pun intended) to the Midas touch concept. The end set with the Grecian mythology-inspired elements looks absolutely gorgeous, making the members look like goddesses.

Promotional Activities

KISS OF LIFE engaged in various promotional activities to generate buzz and anticipation for their single album "Midas Touch". The group surprised fans with a teaser of their official light stick on May 3, revealing a heart shape at the center of the light dome and an expected release date in June. This followed their successful comeback with "Midas Touch" in April.

The group continued their promotional efforts with the release of a cute teaser video for their upcoming album "Sticky" on June 15. In the video, the members expressed their excitement for the upcoming release and their desire to take a trip with their fans. Impact on the Music Industry

KISS OF LIFE's debut single album "Midas Touch" has made a significant impact on music charts worldwide. The album secured the 8th position on the South Korean Albums (Circle) weekly chart and ranked 19th on the monthly chart.

The group's unique sound and style have breathed fresh air into the K-pop industry. Their success can be attributed to their authenticity and the creative involvement of the members from the very beginning. KISS OF LIFE has transitioned into the fifth generation of K-pop in a way that is true to their identity, setting them apart from the girl crush trend that has dominated the industry in recent years.

The members have also made individual contributions to the music scene. Natty collaborated with Jay Park on the song "Taxi Blurr," showcasing her talents as a singer and performer. Julie featured as a rapper on TWICE member NAYEON's solo album, 'NA,' with the song "Magic" becoming the second most streamed track on the album.

KISS OF LIFE's impact extends beyond their music. The debut age of the members, all 18 or older, has been a refreshing change for fans who have expressed concern over the increasing number of idols debuting as minors. The group's success has also been a blessing for their company, S2 Entertainment, which previously managed HOT ISSUE.

As KISS OF LIFE continues to release new music, such as their upcoming single "Sticky" set for release on July 1, 2024, their influence on the K-pop industry is expected to grow. With their talent, style, and authenticity, they are poised to leave a lasting mark on the music scene.
