Early Life and Training Years

Growing up in Seoul

Born on December 18, 1995 in Gwanak District, Seoul Special City, Lim Na Young spent her early childhood in the capital before her family relocated to Asan during her middle school years. The move marked a turning point in her life, coinciding with the awakening of her musical aspirations. She attended Muhak Girls' High School and would later graduate from Dongduk Women's University, balancing her academic pursuits with her dream of becoming a performer.

The decision to become a trainee

The spark that ignited Lim Nayoung's passion for performance came during her first year of middle school. Watching Girls' Generation perform "Gee" on a music show captivated her. She practiced choreography in front of mirrors at home, naturally drawn to dancing and the idea of standing on that same stage. These solo practice sessions evolved into cover dances with friends at talent shows.

Her first audition attempt came when a friend, too nervous to audition alone at JYP Entertainment, asked for company. Nayoung accompanied her but didn't pass. This rejection didn't deter her. She began attending auditions independently, determined to find her path into the industry.

Four years of rigorous training

Pledis Entertainment held an audition to find After School's ninth member, where Nayoung passed the first round but missed the second due to school commitments. The agency sent an email expressing interest in seeing her separately, but she discovered it four months later. After consulting her family, she attended a private audition and became a trainee, beginning her journey in 2010.

Living in South Chungcheong province required taking a bus once or twice weekly for training sessions. She trained for four years and six months, though the total period including Produce 101 extended to four years and seven months.

Pre-debut activities and experiences

Nayoung IOI initially aimed to debut at age 20, but when that goal slipped away, anxiety about her uncertain future set in. She began preparing for college, learning acting and various skills that would later prove valuable. Entering university helped eliminate that anxiety.

By the time Produce 101 opportunity arrived, she viewed it as her final chance. The competitive nature of training had intensified her drive, sharpening her determination with each passing month.

Produce 101 and the Birth of I.O.I

Competing on Produce 101

Six trainees from Pledis Entertainment entered the Mnet survival show that ran from January 22 to April 1, 2016. Five participants faced elimination, leaving only Lim Nayoung and Kyulkyung to reach the final lineup. The competition format required 101 female trainees from different agencies across South Korea to compete for 11 debut spots.

During episode two, Lim Nayoung distinguished herself as one of two trainees who perfectly performed the "PICK ME" evaluation song live, executing lyrics and choreography without a single mistake. This flawless performance earned her a TOP rating and prompted a grade promotion from B to A. Her ranking climbed steadily throughout the show. She passed the first ranking announcement at 24th place, then secured 11th at the second ranking.

The 'Stone Nayoung' nickname

Producers and viewers noticed Lim Na Young's consistent expressionless appearance during filming, which earned her the nicknames "Stone Nayoung" and "Stone Buddha". The moniker became a recurring element on air, turning into a signature characteristic. Episode five featured a loyalty test where crew members smashed what appeared to be a 30 million won camera in front of her, and she worried about the cost rather than reacting emotionally.

Fans observed a different side when she interacted with fellow contestants, calling her "Ondol Nayoung" and "Cold Doll Nayoung" for displaying warmth and gentleness toward colleagues. She later clarified on KBS Power FM's "Park Ji Yoon's Gayo Plaza" that nervousness and her naturally reserved expression created that impression, stating she smiles often and isn't cold.

Ranking 10th and joining I.O.I

Lim Nayoung secured the tenth spot in the final rankings with 138,726 votes, matching the prediction she had written in her application form. Following this achievement, I.O.I debuted on May 4, 2016 with the extended play "Chrysalis" and its lead single "Dream Girls".

Leading I.O.I as the eldest member

The members voted among themselves to select their leader. Ultimately, the eldest member received the most votes and assumed the leadership position. The group promoted together before disbanding on January 29, 2017.

The PRISTIN Era

Debuting with PRISTIN

Following I.O.I's disbandment, Pledis Entertainment announced that Lim Na Young and Kyulkyung would join PRISTIN, debuting on March 21, 2017. The 10-member group released their first mini-album "Hi! PRISTIN" accompanied by the lead single "Wee Woo" on the same day. PRISTIN became the first girl group to debut live on Mnet, holding a showcase that introduced their "power and pretty" concept, which blended powerful energy with beauty.

The title track combined soft, lively pop with rock and synth elements, creating an energetic final mix driven by a strong beat. Their second comeback arrived on August 23 with "Schxxl Out", which featured two physical versions: an "In" version with a high school concept and an "Out" version capturing an after-school vibe. The title track "We Like" marked their final release with all members active.

Self-producing capabilities

PRISTIN distinguished themselves through creative control. Members either composed or wrote lyrics to every track on their debut album. Nayoung Pristin specialized in writing songs and creating choreography, while other members like Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo, and Sungyeon contributed to songwriting and composition. This self-producing approach set them apart in an industry where creative input from members remained relatively rare.

PRISTIN V sub-unit

After more than a year without group activity, Pledis Entertainment formed PRISTIN V on May 17, 2018. The five-member sub-unit consisted of Nayoung, Roa, Eunwoo, Rena, and Kyulkyung. They debuted on May 28, 2018 with the single album "Like a V".

The disbandment in 2019

Pledis Entertainment announced on May 24, 2019 that PRISTIN had officially disbanded. Seven members terminated their contracts, including Nayoung, Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo, Rena, Xiyeon, and Kyla. Kyulkyung, Yehana, and Sungyeon remained with the agency. On July 1, Pledis closed the group's social media accounts and official fan cafe.

The omnibus-format thriller centered on mysterious disappearances at Bukchon Apartment occurring daily at 4:44 p.m..
